The World Cup kicks off, a Deku Tree falls, and Godzilla rises

FIFA's North American return gives LEGO its biggest sporting moment in years, World Cup editions arriving in the tournament's opening week. The Great Deku Tree sold out in the US, a Nintendo Switch 2 casualty. And Godzilla, rumored at over 5,000 pieces for Black Friday, signals where Ideas is heading.

Zelda's Great Deku Tree exits US retail in under two years

The Great Deku Tree (77092) sold out on the US LEGO Shop, officially retired at retail less than two years after its September 2024 launch. The trigger: Nintendo's Switch 2 announcement of an Ocarina of Time remake sent fans racing for remaining stock. Companion set The Final Battle (77093) is still available.

Minty Take

A Nintendo announcement liquidating a LEGO set in real time is a new kind of demand signal. The Zelda line launched cautiously in 2024, and LEGO's planning cadence hasn't caught up to what Nintendo can do to demand in a single day. A successor needs to be in the pipeline already.

Godzilla!

Godzilla is coming to LEGO Ideas, and it could be massive

LEGO Ideas 21375 Godzilla is rumored for a November 2026 release, timed to Black Friday, and early reports from Brick Fanatics and StoneWars put the piece count above 5,000. That would make it the largest Ideas set ever released. A Godzilla GWP is also rumored alongside it.

Minty Take

Ideas has been building toward this. The World Map broke the scale ceiling; Titanic pushed it further; Rivendell hit 6,167 pieces. A 5,000-piece Godzilla for Black Friday is the next beat in a premium tier that has been consolidating for years. The question, as always with these flagship Ideas sets, is the price point (and which Kaiju is next).

Man holding LEGO FIFA World Cup Trophy Set

After 32 years, LEGO is ready for the World Cup's North American return

Football fever hits after a 32-year wait, and LEGO arrives with a full squad: a brick-built Trophy replica, player-inspired LEGO Editions sets, and a World Cup makeover for their biggest stadium build. Brick Fanatics ranked the lineup, and while one set scores big, others barely make the squad.

Minty Take

Sports licenses are LEGO's most variable category. The FIFA partnership, timed to a tournament that arrives every four years, is a good strategic window. Brick Fanatics' ranking suggests uneven execution, though. A four-year cycle is unforgiving: the sets that miss will be at clearance before the next World Cup.

Trend Watch

Nintendo's Switch 2 is writing LEGO's restock calendar

The Deku Tree sold out because a game announcement told it to, not because the product had run its course. That's new territory. The Zelda line launched cautiously in 2024, and LEGO's planning cadence hasn't caught up to what Nintendo can do to demand in a single day. A successor needs to be in the pipeline already.

2027's rumor slate breaks early, and it's ambitious

Oliphaunt, Dune Sandworm, Godzilla at over 5,000 pieces, Star Trek's Enterprise bridge, first Star Wars hints: five threads of 2027 planning surfaced this week. The pattern is large-format display builds across premium licenses. If even half of these confirm, 2027 will be a record-spend year for Icons and Ideas collectors. The mid-year rumor cycle is running early and running hot.

BDP has matured past the 'anything sells' phase

Series 8 is funded, but SlapShotBricks' 24-hour breakdown flagged pre-order numbers that feel softer than earlier series. BDP has matured: the novelty of community-funded LEGO sets has worn off. Buyers are now making value judgments the way they would with any standard release. That's healthier for the program's long-term credibility, but it puts more pressure on the designs themselves.
